The Central Valley seen from the hills above Escazú
Central Valley

Escazú

The hills west of San José — international schools, hospitals, and a mountain climate twenty minutes from the capital.

Escazú climbs from the valley floor into the Cerros de Escazú, and altitude is the thing that matters. Lower Escazú is busy, convenient and warm; by the time you reach San Antonio and the upper roads the temperature has dropped several degrees and the valley is laid out below you.

This is where most internationally mobile families settle, for straightforward reasons: the private hospitals, the international schools, reliable services and a thirty-minute drive to Juan Santamaría airport. The Central Valley's climate is the other reason — between 1,000 and 1,500 metres, it rarely needs heating or cooling.

Property is mostly contemporary houses in small gated enclaves, with a smaller number of large individual lots higher up. The views west across the valley are the defining asset, and whether they are protected by topography or only by a neighbour's goodwill is always worth establishing.
